Reading rules and memorization techniques. Memorization technique for speed reading

For many centuries, people obtained most of the information they needed through reading. Despite the centuries-old history of the appearance of printed materials, the need for high reading speed has appeared only among modern people.

The main incentive was the excessively increased volume of information, the perception and assimilation of which requires accelerated methods. The speed of reading texts by the average person does not exceed 500-700 printed characters per minute, which causes certain difficulties in mastering the material and requires more time to read it.

Speed reading methods - what's the secret?

The very mention of the speed reading technique raises reasonable questions among many about what can be done to increase speed? Knowing and applying a number of simple rules will significantly increase the speed of comprehension of the material read, and will allow you to learn basic methods and principles. Most of the techniques are carried out by eliminating problems that arise due to a number of factors and habits. And so, let's look at the main problems that prevent us from reading the necessary material at the required speed.

The concept of regression means following the read text with the eyes in the opposite direction in order to read the line again. This problem is considered the most common; it is a mistake to think that this method is more conducive to memorization. Many readers automatically re-read the text twice, without even concentrating their attention on it. The average re-reading occurs approximately 10-15 times for every 1000 words of text, which means that the person returns to the beginning of the line and starts reading it again.

In this case, there may be justified repetitions due to the emergence of new thoughts and ideas; this category of repetitions has received the terminology reception. Its main task is a detailed understanding of the material, which requires additional reading of the text. Speed reading rules help make the use of this method an effective aid at the final stage of reading.

Regressions encourage the gaze to make progressive movements in the opposite direction, while there is no justified need for this. If this continues in every line read, then the reader will have to re-read the text twice, and accordingly the reading speed will be lower by the same amount. Such regressions are the most important drawback that reduces reading speed; most often, eye returns are unfounded.

The reason for the occurrence of regression is simple to the point of banality - most often - it is simply the force of habit that arose when reading complex texts or simple inattention, when the need for repetition arises. Simply eliminating regressions will increase your reading speed up to two times, and the correctness of text perception up to three times. Now that your reading speed has increased significantly, you can move on to the next stage.

Reading without using articulations

This concept includes the involuntary use of the tongue and lips, the automatic repetition of what is read “to oneself.” The movement of the speech organs has a direct impact on the speed of reading, significantly slowing down the process. The intensity of such movements is determined by skills, habit and a high level of complexity of a particular text. From early childhood, this skill develops in the wrong direction, which automatically affects the appearance of articulations.

For most people, it is difficult to admit that they have such a concept as articulation, although from the outside we often hear a person “mumbling” something while reading. Thanks to modern research methods, it was possible to find out that almost everyone has such a phenomenon as articulation; x-rays showed the activity of the elements of the pharynx responsible for the pronunciation of sounds. The possibility of eliminating the pronunciation of words even mentally is considered the most rational method of learning to read quickly.

With Vikium you can organize the process of training on the basics of speed reading with an individual program

If you have the belief that you do not pronounce words, in fact this is not the case; the school teaching methodology itself was structured in such a way that articulation (pronouncing out loud) was instilled from school. Relearning is much more difficult than learning again, but the basic techniques of quick reading will radically change the situation for the better.

Methods for solving the problem of repeating reading material

There are several learning techniques to cope with the existing defect, which makes it possible to increase reading speed:

  • If speaking involves the movement of facial muscles, whispering, or other sounds produced, you should simply take some object in your teeth; a pencil is best. The degree of its compression and the unpleasant feelings at the same time will teach you to keep any mechanical movements under control, and you will be able to eliminate the repetition process that interferes with fast reading;
  • Repeating words in thoughts is considered a more complex defect, since the speech center of the brain is involved here. The applicable method for eradicating this deficiency is called “wedge by wedge.” Its meaning boils down to the fact that the speech and motor centers of the brain are adjacent, so reading should be trained to a certain rhythm (not musical), making rhythmic movements while reading. At first glance it looks complicated, but quite effective and efficient.

Fast Reading Basics Using the Integral Algorithm

The main goal of speed reading is not the number of printed characters obtained, but the efficiency and optimization of the information received, its digestibility and perception of the text read. That is, the book should not just be read, but recorded in memory, comprehended and understood. People don’t think about how quickly they read text; they end up reading it slowly in all situations. There is a certain rule, based on it, the technique of reading and perceiving the material must correspond to the assigned tasks. An individual program and its implementation allows you to switch and increase speed reading performance at the necessary moment.

Vertical eye movement

When reading any material, a limited angle of view is used, the emerging section of the text is fixed with the gaze, after which the information is analyzed in the brain. The traditional reading method allows you to fix no more than 2-3 words at a time, after which the eye makes new leaps and subsequent fixations. Accordingly, expanding the field of view will allow you to simultaneously receive a larger amount of information, and reducing the number of stops will make the reading process more efficient. A person who has mastered this method no longer perceives a few words in one fixation, but a whole line, a sentence, and, as the skill develops, even a paragraph.

Such reading will not only increase speed, but will also increase the perception of the material, since the brain will not need to assemble a whole sentence from individual phrases and fragments. The meaning of the text will become more clear, which will contribute to better perception and memorization.

Another significant drawback is the movement of the eyes along the line; such messages take time and effort, causing rapid fatigue. Vertical reading will allow you to avoid such movements, saving energy and time in the process of reading the material. Movement of the gaze vertically makes it possible to develop quick reading methods and improve the quality of assimilation.

Highlighting the dominant or main meaning of the text read

The problem of perceiving text material read may be associated with the difficulty of reconstructing the connecting components of objects and the knowledge available about them. When reading a simple text, we gain perception based on the already existing knowledge base, we understand the already known meaning and meaning of words, associating them with our own perception. With texts that are difficult to understand, carrying a flow of new information, the situation is more complicated; it requires the installation of a new logical chain, built in space and time.

The process of comprehending the material read in such a situation requires concentration, a sufficient amount of knowledge and skills in its application, as well as proper mastery of certain thinking techniques. The desire to remember a text evokes a natural desire to understand it, for which the following techniques are used. Key supporting points in the text are highlighted, and anticipation is also used.

The principle of identifying support points in the semantic chain is as follows. The entire text is divided into parts, each of them has its own meaning, which improves reading comprehension and promotes memorization. The supporting element of the text can be any concept associated with it. They can be any minor details, terms or associations that make memorization easier.

Any association, compressed information carrying a general semantic load, can serve as a support. The meaning of this method comes down to the need to understand the main idea of what is written and highlight important and significant phrases. Thus, the central concept and main idea are isolated from the text, which ultimately makes it possible to collect associated concepts into one general idea, which is the main principle of the general understanding of the text. This technique allows you to gain a general understanding of the text without losing its semantic meaning.

Another important technique for increasing reading speed is anticipation or anticipation of further text based on a semantic guess. You can also define this concept as a psychological prediction of a text located in the future. It is based on techniques for determining the logical development of events, based on the results of the analysis of previous events. Anticipation ensures anticipation of the process, even in those moments when the prerequisites for this do not exist.

It is possible to practice such a phenomenon only if the thinking is productive, for which certain skills should be developed. Here the reader focuses his attention on the holistic content of the written text, and not on its specific parts. The basis for applying the method is understanding the general content of what you read, but not its parts separately.

The need to fully concentrate on doing a certain job allows you to do it more efficiently (carefully). The skill of managing your attention while reading is a key element in reading quickly and fully comprehending the material. Slow reading makes it possible to switch attention to foreign objects, which prevents you from fully mastering the information received. Therefore, the faster we read, the better we understand the material we read. If a person thinks about something extraneous while reading, this may cause him to re-read an entire passage of text again.

Daily quota and fulfillment of obligations

The accepted reading standard is considered to be several news papers, a scientific or technical journal, and about a hundred pages of fiction. Completing such a program will allow you to master and improve the skill of reading at a fast pace and will make it possible to constantly maintain the necessary “form”. The ideal option for implementing all existing techniques is exercise courses to develop such skills.

What is speed reading?

Speed reading (or quick reading) is the ability to quickly perceive text information using special reading methods. Fast reading is 3-4 times faster than normal reading. (Wikipedia).

One of the most popular “speed reading” schools in Russia, the school of Oleg Andreev, says that after completing 2 levels of training, you can achieve a reading speed of 10,000 characters per minute, which is approximately 5-7 pages of an average book.

It turns out that in a half-hour trip on the subway at this speed you can read 150-200 pages of a book. This is much more than the average person will read in that amount of time.

In addition to the “Oleg Andreev School”, such well-known experts in speed reading as Natalia Grace, Andrei Spodin, Vladimir and Ekaterina Vasiliev and many others offer their courses. However, some people learned to read quickly without attending courses, schools, trainings and special centers, as well as without reading textbooks on speed reading - you even know many of them, these are Maxim Gorky, Vladimir Lenin, Thomas Edison and many others. Therefore, try to learn it yourself first, especially since it will not cost you anything.

How fast do you read?

We suggest you test how fast you read. To do this, read the text in the exercise below and answer a few questions to help you understand it.

Course Description

This course is designed to master the skill of speed reading. This speed reading skill is most useful for studying Internet resources, information articles, reading newspapers, magazines, popular science literature, and textbooks. Fast reading will allow you not only to read texts faster, but also to better master information - find it and remember it in order of priority.

This training involves daily exercise at home or at work for 20-40 minutes (you can do it less often, but then the effect will be less). The course consists of 5 stages, each of which involves mastering certain skills that help you read quickly. To master a skill, it is important to practice more - read articles on resources that interest you (for example, sections you like on Wikipedia), read newspapers, magazines, textbooks - devote at least an additional half hour a day to this.

With this training regimen, you will get results in just a couple of weeks, and if you study for 2-3 months, you will be able to significantly increase the speed and quality of reading.

How to learn to read quickly?

To learn to read quickly on this site, simply follow the exercises described in the 5 lessons. If we try to generalize various techniques for teaching speed reading, then the process of mastering this skill can be divided into 5 parts (these are 5 lessons). Each lesson allows you to master a specific skill that will increase your reading speed and efficiency in mastering the material. The content of the lessons is structured in such a way that you can study online as interactively and conveniently as possible without teachers or tutors.

First, watch all the lessons, try to do the exercises, if a skill is given to you quickly, then do not stop for a long time on this lesson. For example, many people do not have trouble paying attention when reading and are able to skip straight to Lesson 2. Pay more attention to lessons and activities that:

  1. seem useful to you
  2. cause you problems.

It is not necessary to go through the exercises in the sequence indicated in the lessons, the main thing is to achieve the goal for each part.

5 speed reading lessons

5 Skills Helpful to Reading Faster which you can learn on our website:

1. Focus(LESSON 1)
You've probably noticed that an interesting book is read in one sitting and faster than a boring textbook. Also, for example, when reading an interesting book, you gradually speed up, immersing yourself in the reading process... Attention for speed reading is very important, and most importantly, it can be trained.

2. Suppression of articulation (speaking text)(LESSON 2)
Most people have the habit of reading a text by speaking it to themselves. If you want to read the text quickly, you need to do it “silently”, that is, freeing yourself from articulation.

3. Improving visual skills(LESSON 3)
The ability to see all the text at once in a paragraph or even on a page, to understand its structure, to read not from left to right, but from top to bottom (or, as they say, “diagonally”) is an important skill in fast reading. Therefore, visual skills also need to be trained, and in life they can be useful when driving a car, in team sports, etc. The lesson presents special tables and a simulator for training speed reading.

4. Read and manage information quickly(LESSON 4)
It's no secret that most texts have only a small part of useful information that you must learn to quickly find. This skill most often comes with reading experience, but you can speed up this process with the help of special exercises.

5. Speed reading and memory development(LESSON 5)
When you learn to read quickly, you will be able to absorb a fairly large amount of information. But the skill of fast reading may turn out to be useless if what you read is forgotten, which in principle is not strange, given such a volume of information. You need to be able to remember this information.

In addition, the site provides additional materials on quick reading: books and textbooks, videos, simulators and programs, materials for downloading, as well as articles with comments and reviews from social networks.

When mentioning the speed reading technique, most people have the following questions: what causes an increase in reading speed?

But they are all based on a few basic rules. So:

Some readers, unnoticed by themselves, read any text twice - both easy and difficult, as if to be sure. The areas of such repeated eye fixations that occur during traditional reading are sometimes very large.

As our research has shown, when reading slowly, regressions are a fairly common occurrence, and their number is usually from 10 to 15 for a text of 100 words. It is clear that such frequent recurrent eye movements sharply reduce reading speed.

The main goal of reception is a deeper understanding of a text that has already been read once. The speed reading technique recommends re-reading only after finishing reading the entire text.

When reading a text with regressions, the eyes move backward, for example, from point 2 to point 3, although there is no need for this. If this happens on every line of text, then obviously the reader reads the entire text twice.

It is this kind of regression that is considered one of the main disadvantages of traditional slow reading. Along with regressions during slow reading, recurrent eye movements were also noticed, caused by the apparent difficulties of the text.

These returns are also a lack of reading. Very often, further reading resolves the questions that have arisen and makes returns unnecessary. What is the nature of regression?

The first reason is force of habit. Record the reasons for repeated reading: is the text really difficult or lack of attention?

Remember: eliminating regressions increases your reading speed by two times and the quality of your reading comprehension by three times.

2. READ WITHOUT ARTICULATION

Articulation- these are involuntary movements of the lips, tongue, and elements of the larynx when reading a text to oneself. The movements of the speech organs when reading silently are inhibited only externally, but in fact they are in constant hidden movement.

The intensity of these micro-movements depends, first of all, on the level of development of reading skills and the complexity of the text. The less developed the skill of reading silently (in children) and the more complex the text, the more pronounced the articulation.

Many people say they have no articulation or don't know what it is. Others, on the contrary, claim that they constantly hear someone muttering next to them when they read the text.

Even if the reader declares that he does not have articulation, special measurements can be used to detect it. X-ray filming of pharyngeal modulations during reading showed the presence of intracavitary articulation even in people who read relatively quickly.

Indeed, eliminating the internal pronunciation of words is the most important source of increasing speed reading.

Moreover, even if it seems to you that you are not pronouncing words, then this is not so, the method of teaching reading that has been hammered into our heads since elementary school - that is, reading aloud - makes itself felt and, as we know, relearning is much harder than learning .

The defect in pronunciation of readable words can be divided into the following components:

1. When speaking is accompanied by mechanical movements: moving the lips, moving the tongue, or, even worse, audio - mechanical effects - muttering, etc. To combat this is quite simple - hold something in your teeth, or even better, hold your tongue teeth - no matter how funny, but by changing the pain sensation (the degree of compression by the teeth), you can control the entire process of eradicating this inhibitory factor.

2. The most difficult thing to eradicate is pronouncing words in the brain, i.e., the speech center. The method used here is to knock out a wedge with a wedge. The center that controls movement is located somewhere next to the speech center, and you can try to suppress the speech center with the motor center - it’s super difficult to fight this - holding something in your teeth won’t help, but you can try the following. You record some kind of rhythm (but not music) on a cassette - for example, a metronome. Moreover, there should be several records with different beat frequencies and combined with a variable beat frequency. You need to read to this beat (rhythm) and make movements while reading.

The main thing in the problem of fast reading is not so much speed as optimality, the efficiency of obtaining meaningful information thanks to the correct choice of a program for the semantic perception of the text.

Readers, as a rule, do not think about how to read a particular text. As a result, it is equally slow to read.

This or that reading speed and technique is subject, first of all, to the goals, objectives and guidelines that the reader sets for himself. It is the development of appropriate programs, the ability to flexibly use each of them at the right time, that determine the ability to read quickly.

Typically, traditional reading uses a small field of view. The field of view is understood as a section of text that is clearly perceived by the eyes during one fixation of the gaze.

In traditional reading, when at best 2-3 words are perceived, the field of view is very small. As a result, the eyes make many unnecessary jumps and fixations (stops).

This technique can be called fragmentation of the gaze. The wider the field of view, the more information is perceived at each stop of the eyes, the fewer these stops, and as a result, reading becomes more effective. A fast reader, in one fixation of his gaze, manages to perceive not 2-3 words, but an entire line, an entire sentence, sometimes an entire paragraph.

Reading text in whole phrases Not only is it more efficient in terms of speed, it also promotes deeper reading comprehension. This happens because the perception of large fragments of text during moments of fixation with the gaze evokes visual-figurative ideas that clearly clarify the meaning of the text.

The reading speed is also significantly reduced by the unproductive transition of the eyes from the end of each line read to the beginning of a new one. How many lines there are on the page, there are so many unnecessary transitions, i.e., idle eye movements, which are spent on; not only time, but also energy.

When reading quickly, eye movement is more economical: vertically, from top to bottom in the center of the page.

5. ALWAYS HIGHLIGHT THE DOMINANT - THE MAIN MEANING OF THE TEXT

Problem understanding the text has been studied fruitfully by psychologists for quite a long time. What is understanding? Psychologists call understanding the establishment of a logical connection between objects by using existing knowledge.

When reading a simple text, understanding seems to merge with perception - we instantly recall previously acquired knowledge (we realize the known meaning of words) or select from the existing knowledge what is needed at the moment and connect it with new impressions.

But very often, when reading an unfamiliar and difficult text, understanding the subject (application of knowledge and establishing new logical connections) is a complex process that unfolds over time.

To comprehend the text in such cases, it is necessary not only to be attentive when reading, to have knowledge and be able to apply it, but also to master certain thinking techniques. If it is necessary to remember a text, a person first tries to understand it better and uses various techniques for this.

Most often, readers use two main techniques: highlighting semantic reference points And anticipation.

Identification of supporting semantic points is as follows. Dividing the text into parts, their semantic grouping leads to the identification of semantic support points that deepen understanding and facilitate subsequent memorization of the material.

Psychologists have found that the basis of understanding can be everything that we associate with, what is remembered or what itself “pops up” as connected with it. These may be some minor words, additional details, definitions, etc.

Any association can be a support in this sense. A semantic support point is something short, compressed, but at the same time serving as the basis for some broader content. Understanding comes down to grasping the main ideas, significant words, and short phrases in the text that predetermine the text of subsequent pages.

The technique of highlighting semantic reference points is like a process of filtering and compressing the text without losing the basis.

Another technique used to further comprehend the text being read is called anticipation or anticipation, i.e. a semantic guess. What is anticipation? This is the psychological process of orientation towards a foreseeable future.

It is based on knowledge of the logic of the development of an event, assimilation of the results of the analysis of signs, previously carried out by operational thinking. Anticipation is provided by the so-called hidden reaction of expectation, which sets the reader up for certain actions when, according to the text, there seems to be no sufficient reason for these reactions.

The phenomenon of anticipation is possible only when thinking actively works in a productive mode. With this type of reading, the reader relies more on the content of the text as a whole than on the meaning of individual words. The main thing is to comprehend the idea of content, to identify the main intention of the author of the text.

Thus, when learning to read quickly, the ability to anticipate is the main factor in the formation of a unique sense of phrasal stereotypes and the accumulation of a sufficient vocabulary of text cliches. Identification of phrase stereotypes is one of the first prerequisites for developing automaticity of semantic text processing.

6. CONSTANTLY DEVELOP YOUR ATTENTION AND MEMORY

What is attention? Attention- this is the selective orientation of consciousness when performing certain work. Fast reading requires increased attention. Unfortunately, we are not always organized and do not know how to manage our attention when reading.

Most readers' reading speed is far below what they could achieve without compromising comprehension. For a slow reader, attention often switches to extraneous thoughts and objects, and interest in the text decreases. Therefore, large fragments are read mechanically and the meaning of what is read does not reach consciousness.

Such a reader, noticing that he is thinking about extraneous things, is often forced to re-read the passage again. A person who reads quickly is able to control his attention.

Ability to concentrate on a problem is one of the components of successful mental work. Try training your ability to concentrate by mentally reading words back to front.

When you mentally read a word backwards, you have to picture it letter by letter and then read those letters. For example - “word” - “ovols”, “road” - “agorod”. If your consciousness is distracted by a third-party object, then the thread is instantly lost and you have to do the exercise again. This way you can train your attention.

This exercise can be done in public transport and thereby use wasted time to your advantage. Start with simple four-letter words. Gradually try to operate with longer words.

7. COMPLETE THE DAILY MANDATORY STANDARD:

read two newspapers, one magazine (scientific, technical or popular science) and 50-100 pages of any book. Mastering the technique of speed reading is indeed a process of complex influence on various aspects of human mental activity.

Figuratively speaking, in the learning process it is realized program for technical re-equipment of the brain. A restructuring of consciousness is taking place, existing stereotypes of thinking are being broken. There are good books on teaching speed reading. For example, the book by Andreev O. A. and Khromov L. N. “Learning to read quickly.”

But the most effective option for learning to read quickly is special training and group classes.

The main thing is to remember that speed reading is not for the elite. Diligence and consistency of training are important.

July 22, 2018 The third module of the “Emotional Intelligence” course – “Interaction Practice” – was more difficult for most group members than all the others. It’s one thing when you diagnose your condition and learn to correct it, and quite another thing when you have contact with others. When we share our feelings with other people, we become closer to each other. Isn't this what we want?..

May 02, 2018 Six months have passed since Zhenya Kryukova and I decided to explore the topic of emotional intelligence. During this time, I managed to attend a two-day intensive course with Vasily Pron, and we both attended the first two modules of the “Emotional Intelligence” course with the Zakharov family coaching couple...

In the lives of each of us there have been situations when it was necessary to study certain material within a short period of time. The best solution to this problem is to master it. Moreover, it can be successfully applied not only to scientific, but also to fiction. At the same time, the technique of fast reading with a high level of memorization is especially relevant and significant for any person. How to achieve the desired effect? To do this, you need to learn 7 basic rules for fast reading. What are they?

Reading without regression

Often a person studying the material he needs makes return movements with his eyes. This is regression, the purpose of which is to repeat lines already read. This is the most common drawback that leads to slow learning of the material.

Unbeknownst to themselves, many readers scan the text twice. It does not matter whether it is easy to understand or not. Regression is performed to be sure, resulting in a sharp decrease in reading speed.

However, there are returns that are considered valid. A person makes these eye movements when a new thought appears. They, in contrast to regression, are called reception. Such repetitions are completely justified, as they allow you to comprehend what has already been read as deeply as possible. Methods for quickly memorizing text do not recommend such return movements. Repeated reading is possible only after the text has been completely completed.

Remember that refusal of receptions and regressions is very important. He is able to double and triple the quality of his understanding.

Reading without articulations

Sometimes, when studying material silently, a person makes involuntary movements with his tongue, lips and elements of the larynx. This is articulation. Its intensity is directly dependent on the complexity of the text and the development of reading skills. Moreover, articulation is observed in everyone, even in people who read quickly. This is confirmed by special measurements and x-rays of pharyngeal modulations made during the process of studying the text silently.

The technique of fast reading with a high level of memorization eliminates the internal pronunciation of words. This is due to the fact that articulation is an important obstacle to quickly learning the material. These should be excluded if the technique of speed reading is mastered. Exercises for speed reading should be aimed at eliminating the pronunciation defect and depend on its type. So, if articulation is a mechanical movement of the tongue, lips, muttering, etc., then it is necessary to exercise constant control over this process. How? Put something in your mouth or hold your tongue firmly with your teeth. Pain will be the most noticeable inhibitory factor.

It will be more difficult to eradicate the pronunciation of words in the speech center of the brain. The main method for this is to knock out a wedge with a wedge. It takes advantage of the fact that the speech and motor control centers are located next to each other. It is recommended to record some non-musical rhythm (metronome) produced at different frequencies and their combinations. This is the sound you should read to.

Integral algorithm

For people studying large amounts of information, the technique of fast reading with a high level of memorization of the necessary material is extremely important. How to achieve this? It is necessary to develop an integral algorithm for memorizing when reading. After all, many simply do not think about how they should study the text. As a result, they read extremely slowly. The speed and reading technique that is used when studying the material depends on the goals and objectives set by the reader. A person must develop appropriate programs, as well as flexibly and skillfully use them at the right time. This will largely determine his speed reading ability.

Vertical eye movement

This is the fourth rule of the technique for quickly mastering material. It involves perceiving a larger portion of the text than during normal reading. Expanding the field of view can significantly increase the efficiency of assimilation of material. A fast reader is able to perceive more than just 2-3 words during one fixation of his gaze. It captures the meaning of an entire line, sentence, or even paragraph.

Perceiving text in phrases is a fast reading technique with a high level of memorization. Why is this happening? The fact is that, looking at large fragments of text, a person creates for himself visual and figurative representations of the presented material. They are a clear explanation of the meaning of what is read. With this technique, the eyes move vertically, in a direction from above the center of the text.

Isolation of the dominant

What accompanies the most effective perception of the material? First of all, it must be understood. This means nothing more than establishing logical connections between objects using the knowledge a person already has.

Speed reading and understanding of text is a problem that psychologists have been successfully studying for quite a long time. Sometimes the material we perceive is not at all complex. In this case, his understanding goes hand in hand with his perception. A person immediately remembers the knowledge he has previously acquired and connects it with the phrases he is reading. However, the text may be unfamiliar and difficult. In this case, its comprehension is a complex and lengthy process. How to speed it up? To do this, you should be careful while reading, and also have a considerable amount of knowledge, being able to apply it in a given situation. You will also need to use some techniques. One of them is to highlight the main semantic points of the text. What is its meaning? To increase the perception of the text, it is divided into two parts, producing a semantic grouping. At the same time, a dominant is highlighted, deepening the understanding of the material and contributing to its more effective memorization. This also helps develop speed reading memory.

In this case, fast reading becomes possible when the text is perceived in the form of short and at the same time significant logical formulas. Each of these structural units has a basic concept that is associated with a certain image. Reading the entire text represents the creation of a single logical chain of ideas. This is the essence of the method of identifying key semantic points.

Another technique can be used to comprehend the material. It is called anticipation, or anticipation. This is a semantic guess, which is a psychological process of orientation towards the future, which is within the framework of the foreseen. Anticipation is based on knowledge of the logic of developing events, as well as analysis of existing signs of a phenomenon and assimilation of its results. This technique of speed reading is possible in the presence of a hidden reaction of expectation, when the reader is tuned to certain actions that arise during the course of the text. At the same time, a person’s thinking should work very productively, comprehending the idea of content and identifying the main intention of the author. Thus, anticipation when speed reading is the formation of a kind of instinct for stereotypical phrases and the accumulation of an extensive vocabulary of text cliches. It is also a prerequisite for the development of automatic semantic processing of the material being studied.

Development of attention and memory

Speed reading and memorization require a selective focus of consciousness on performing specific work. This function is attention. Often people are not capable of self-organization. That is why they are not able to control their attention when reading. Thus, a person who slowly perceives the material he needs, often switches his attention to all sorts of foreign objects and thoughts. This leads to loss of interest in the text and misunderstanding of its meaning. Anyone who reads quickly can control their attention.

One of the components of effective mental work is the ability to concentrate on the issue at hand. The best way to train this ability is to mentally read words backwards. This can be done anywhere, for example, while traveling on public transport. Any word must be represented in the form of letters and read backwards. For example, “water” means “hell”. First, you can take words consisting of four letters, and then select them longer. This exercise is great for training attention.

Compliance with mandatory norms

The seventh rule of quick reading involves daily reading of two newspapers, one popular science or scientific and technical magazine, as well as a book volume of 50-100 pages. Why is it important? The fact is that in order to master the technique of fast reading, it is necessary to make a complex impact on various aspects of an individual’s mental activity.

This leads to the implementation of a program of technical re-equipment of the brain, which rebuilds consciousness and breaks existing stereotypes of thinking.

Fast Reading Pace

Anyone who has mastered the technique of high-speed text perception processes information at different speeds, choosing it depending on the type of literature. Thus, news and newspapers are read with speed, allowing one to grasp their meaning. Fiction requires a special speed that involves imagination. Scientific publications require not only speed, but also careful processing of the material.

The Importance of Speed Reading

The technique of fast reading with a high level of memorization is the only way to master millions of gigabytes of information around. If you are a curious person and want to get to know the whole world, we recommend starting classes without delay. What books are worth studying for quick reading?

To understand the cuisine of quick reading, a few articles are not enough. We recommend turning to books: this is a source of concentrated information, written in chronological order.

Purchase or download:

  • "The art of reading. How to Understand Books" Thomas Foster. Read before you start speed reading. Using the example of classic works, the author teaches to understand the meaning between the lines and perceive information from a different angle. “Memories, symbols, parallels—that’s what separates the professional reader from the amateur,” says Foster. Adopting a different model of reading books will help you better remember information, which will now be based on associative thinking and connected to past experiences.
  • “Speed reading in practice. How to read quickly and remember what you read well” Pavel Palagin. The book was recognized by millions of book lovers and received good reviews. The methods are simple and understandable, allowing you to master the technique of fast reading in a few weeks. The author harshly criticizes slow readers, thereby motivating them to quickly finish studying the issue. At seminars, Palagin does not hesitate to advise reading only 25% of the book and discarding the rest as unnecessary. This statement fuels the interest of the public, seeking to refute the words of the author.
  • "The Development of Memory" by Harry Lorraine. An ideal book for training your memory and imagination. After reading, you will begin to better perceive information, remember dates and large numbers, and playfully continue the storyline of any story.

How to develop attention span for fast reading

The already mentioned Pavel Palagin said: “If there is the main secret of effectiveness, it is concentration.” Indeed, without it you will not be able to read quickly. The point is the types of human attention, which we wrote about in detail. It is necessary to have strong voluntary attention in order to keep your eyes on the book, be drawn into it and not be distracted by extraneous noises. Let's give some exercises:

  • Take a blank sheet of paper and a pencil: without lifting the lead from the paper, draw a line in arbitrary directions. Keep an eye on her. As soon as your attention shifts to something else, start again. Do the exercise, gradually increasing the time daily. The ideal result is 5 minutes.
  • Sit on a chair. Raise your hands to chest level and clasp your index fingers. Separate them 2-3 mm from each other and twist clockwise. The circumscribed circle should be small. For 7 minutes, watch your fingertips without looking away. If your gaze jumps, start the exercise over again.
  • We suggest you master the exercise “Concentration on a point” using a video example. Follow everything the commentator says and you will get the effect after the first workout.

We have already given tips on quick reading in this article. Let’s add to what has been said and offer a few more life hacks:

  • You can read quickly only in two positions: sitting or standing with a straight back. In these cases, concentration is at its limit, you absorb information better. If you are reading while sitting on a chair and feel like you are falling asleep, get up for 15–20 minutes;
  • before you sit down to read a book, let the energy into you: dance for 3-4 minutes, do finger gymnastics or exercise
  • Before reading, smile at the book you are about to pick up. Despite how stupid it sounds, the book will “smile” back at you. At the psychological level, the technique helps to tune in to the positive. In this state, any information is perceived easier and remembered faster;
  • take Glycine D3: it saturates the brain with oxygen. This enhances attention and allows you to concentrate better;
  • The advice is suitable for non-fiction: open the conclusions for the chapter and carefully analyze them. Slowly and thoughtfully. Then read the entire chapter. You will be able to repeat the material you have covered and remember it better. Thanks to the known facts, your reading speed will increase - you will glide through new material, catching what you already know out of the corner of your eye.

Finally, I would like to say in the words of John Witherspoon, an American actor: “Never read a book just because you started reading it.” Look for your “literature” and devote your free time to it. This way the quality of knowledge and level of skills will increase significantly. Have a good day!
